At West Kirby from February 1956 for training ten on to Compton Basset, Innsworth, and then to East Africa (Kenya).
West Kirby was not my favourite place, but I met a lot of good guys there despite the problems.

SORRY It was me who posted the private entry and Mike Brogan has not got hold of the wrong end of the stick. I was`nt sure if I was eligible to sign the Guest Book as I was never in the RAF. I was a member of No.400 (1st Birkenhead ) Squadron ATC Drill Team in 1952 & 1953. Our Squadron formed the Cheshire Wing Drill Team in the NationalInter Wing Drill Competition for the Kings Challenge and we won on both occasions. We did all our training at RAF West Kirby with the regular Drill Instructors. We arrived on friday nights and left on sunday nights for about 2 months before the Competition.I was 15 and 16 then and living in Upton Village knew RAF West Kirby very well.A few years later I used to go to a Dance Hall in Moreton on sunday nights, it was called The Haigh Hall and I bet some of you lads remember that place.

There are some earlier comments from me in the "Bits and Pieces" section. Briefly recapping , I was at WK from late Nov 1953 to Jan 1954 then on to RAF Locking as a Ground Wireless Fitter.
A few more items dragged from memory.
A trip to Anfield to see Liverpool play Blackpool with the late , great Stanley Matthews. A big step up for me more used to watching Norwich City in the nether regions of the then 3rd Division South.
I also remember an afternoon trip to RAF Wilmsow as spectators to a Football Matched and being somewhat amused by the WRAF new recruits going through the same pain as us only an octave or so higher.
For the life of me I cannot remember my Squadron. I know that we were billeted in the far back right hand corner away form the Main Gate and never had any plastic disc behind the cap badge. Incidentally our cookhouse was in the far back left hand corner so an appetite was assured by the thrice daily march there and back.
I am amazed by the somewhat fond memories some people have of the DIs . I share no such memories even now.
David Tennant

I did come from West Kirby and worked the R.A.F. Camp It was my first job after leaving school I worked in the offer's mess shop And only 15years old, I left because I was scared of the Corporal Personel some of them where way above themselves, I do remember the R.T.O that was opposite the West Kirby station we only lived in Tynwald road so i learnt to live with the going's and coming's of the RAF men.

Interesting re the Cinema and the railway station, if you could send me photos of how they are today I can put them on with the ones from our days.
All the best.

Did my S/Bashing in 1953, i was taught how to March,Fold Blankets, Polish Floors, Fire a Rifle, Fire a Bren Gun,and sundrie other things, after posting to the wilds of Somerset, and later Shropshire, i never ever again did any of the aforementioned.
I enjoy this site, but i wonder sometimes if many contributors have a very selective memory, i know no one who served alongside me who enjoyed the place, and could not wait to get away from there.
I guess it takes all sorts, i hope this will provoke many replies.
God Bless, Merry Christmas.
Eddie Edwards.

A great site! The photos submitted terrific, yet they all seem to miss my two months! These were July/August 1951 with D Squadron the one with the green and white disc behind the cap badge. Would be pleased to hear from anyone also there in that very hot summer's square bashin' that left a strongly marked red sunburned line along the border of our berets! I remember the song of the day they made us sing during our kitting out at Cardington - or was it at WK (when we were made to watch "all those films about you know what"!! The song was "On Top of Old Smokey..." designed to lift up our communal hearts I think (after "those films").

I was square bashing at WK in Sgt Dunkerly's A Squadron from late August to November 1953. Any of you guys out there?
My arch enemy was DI Cpl Gregg. To misquote Kenneth Williams, "Infamy Infamy he's got it in for me"
Bet he never knew that I used to skip the crack of dawn Breakfast Parade and run round the other three sides of the Square to beat the heaving queue at the Cookhouse.
I couldn't wait to get to RAF Yatesbury and sanity.

Joined on 1st June 1950 at RAF Padgate and arrived at WK around the 7th June.
Afraid I cannot remember any of the names of the Guys.On Sundays I use to walk to Moreton Baptist Church and a local Grocer use to invite the RAF lads for Sunday lunch which was very nice. Left WK at the end of 6th week of square bashing for embarkation leave en route via RAF Hednesford for RAF Kasfareet ( 107MU) in Egypt and learnt while at sea on the Empire Fowey that we would do 2 years instead of 18 months. Have never regretted my time in the RAF

A great site. I squarebashed at WK from 8th Nov.1950 until 17. Jan 1951. We were the first intake of regulars (mostly 3 year men) to be admitted after all the NS intakes. God it was cold. Dont remember my hut/flight number or anything else but still have several old photos of the lads.Johnny Bichard from Guernsey,Ron Trenery,Charlesworth, Coker, Bellamy, Donovan, Walker (Dewsbury?),Alderson,Barston and Bob Best amongst others. Have checked all 103 pages but found no one with matching dates or similar numbers, mine was 4051280 nickname was Johnny the jockey. After Wk went to Yatesbury for training as AWM then direct to 390 MU Seletar Singapore on AESF flight. I am interested in hearing from anyone from these years from WK, Yatesbury or Seletar. Keep up the good work,
